GOVERNMENT GETS THE MESSAGE
The Government has promised to clean up the shambolic House of Commons expenses system.
Ministers vowed to banish greedy MPs from abusing the public purse.[>
But they were left humiliated yesterday.[>
Officials were pressured into finally suspending three MPs charged with fiddling their expense accounts.[>
David Chaytor, Jim Devine and Elliot Morley all stand accused of ripping off taxpayers.[>
But they had been enjoying party priv-ileges up until yesterday.[>
It was only when the Government’s hand was forced by a public outcry that ministers reluctantly ditched them.[>
Why was this not done days ago?[>
Britain needs a powerful leadership.[>
Voters want those in charge to come down hard on the worst offenders.[>
Anyone facing criminal charges should instantly be removed from Parliament until they have gone through trial.[>
No one is saying these three men are guilty. That is, of course, for the courts to decide.[>
But if ministers are serious about cleaning up our shattered political system they must act tough. They cannot be weak.[>
Yesterday they were.[>
