GOVERNMENT GETS THE MESSAGE

9th February 2010

The Government has promised to clean up the shambolic House of Commons expenses system.

Ministers vowed to banish greedy MPs from abusing the public purse.

But they were left humiliated yesterday.

Officials were pressured into finally suspending three MPs charged with fiddling their expense accounts.

David Chaytor, Jim Devine and Elliot Morley all stand accused of ripping off taxpayers.

But they had been enjoying party priv-ileges up until yesterday.

It was only when the Government’s hand was forced by a public outcry that ministers reluctantly ditched them.

Why was this not done days ago?

Britain needs a powerful leadership.

Voters want those in charge to come down hard on the worst offenders.

Anyone facing criminal charges should instantly be removed from Parliament until they have gone through trial.

No one is saying these three men are guilty. That is, of course, for the courts to decide.

But if ministers are serious about cleaning up our shattered political system they must act tough. They cannot be weak.

Yesterday they were.
