BRITAIN'S POLICE OFFICERS: 1.5M CRIMES LEFT UNSOLVED

23rd November 2009

IF you thought ministers run our armed forces badly, you should see how woeful some of Britain’s police forces can be.

More than 1.5 million crimes are ignored every year simply because officers are too busy or they fear there’s no hope of solving them.

It’s not just cases like burglaries and vandalism tossed in the bin.

It’s also robbery and sex assault.

A technique used to dismiss cases is known as “screening out”.

Officially, this means a senior officer decides the manpower devoted is unlikely to result in a conviction.

Of nearly 100,000 break-ins in London last year, over half were ignored.

Chief Constables say they don’t have the coppers to do the job properly.

Try telling that to someone who has had their house burgled.

Home Secretary Alan Johnson last week promised to make sure every crime is investigated.

We won’t hold our breath.
