THE 3D box-office smash Alice In Wonderland helped Cineworld defy the recession.


Chief executive Stephen Wiener said the success of the movie, starring Helena Bonham Carter, left, justifi ed the
cinema chain’s decision to invest £10million in converting screens to the digital technology needed for the latest 3D films.

The firm saw pre-tax profits rise 11.6% to £30.8m on revenues up 11.5% to £333.4m for the year to December.

There were 13 3D fi lms released in 2009, with the figure set to rise to 18 this year, including the next Harry Potter fi lm and Toy Story 3.
